GENERAL   INFORMATION

This Hermitage Grand Excursion Poster is an advertisement poster for an excursion steamboat, the Dora Cabler that went up the Cumberland River from the wharf in Nashville to the Hermitage, the home of Andrew Jackson. The 50¢ round trip included refreshments.

The Hermitage is illustrated at the top and the riverboat  Dora Cabler is shown on the bottom.

George B. Kirchner reconstructed and recreated this advertisement poster from an antique Hermitage Poster that was printed in 1885.    It is reproduced in black and white on off-white paper.  The poster is recreated almost identically to the original.  One change is the year "1880" that is added in the type after the original words, "SUNDAY, MAY 23,".  The year was not shown on the original.  Extensive research by Kirchner in the archives revealed newspaper advertisements that proved the year to be 1880.

The name of the printers on the bottom was changed to read "Kirchner & Kirchner, Printers."

The type was reset and is virtually identical to the original.  Significant restoration and reconstruction work was done on the Hermitage and the Dora Cabler steamboat.
